What is JAM?
JAM is an adaptable artistic platform initiated in 2020 by visual artists Pelle Brage and Julia Bruun.
Based in Kristiansand, Norway, JAM creates public and socially engaged art through sculpture, performance and participatory situations. Its projects can become large-scale public artworks, temporary art institutions or brief interventions in everyday life.
The works are often situations as much as objects. People, movement and social interaction become part of their sculptural form. Humour and play create accessible ways into larger political and social questions.
YOU’RE IN
With JAM, you might not only look at the artwork. You might find yourself inside it.
You could become an animal in Reversed Zoo, enter the Colosseum as a gladiator or take responsibility for what appears on a public billboard.
Participation begins with a strong artistic proposition. JAM establishes a physical or social frame, then leaves room for people to act within it and change what the work becomes.
The situation is carefully constructed, but the outcome is not completely controlled. When people enter the work, society enters with them.
The artwork becomes something we could not have made alone.

Collaboration
JAM’s constellation changes from project to project, bringing in new collaborators when the work calls for it.
Performers Ulrik Waarli Grimstad and Thomas Askeland Svendsen have been important recurring collaborators since JAM’s early years, helping to shape many works through their performances, ideas and willingness to test things in reality.
Many of the works depend on collaboration to exist and to develop beyond their original proposition. JAM is a working method: a way of developing ideas by building, dreaming, testing and trying them in reality.
