FASTEST ART IN TOWN!

Ten artists. Ten remote-controlled sculptures. One winner. No jury required.

JAM PUBLIC invited ten local artists to each transform a remote-controlled car into a moving sculpture—and then race their artworks against one another.

One of the races took over Markens gate, Kristiansand’s busy pedestrian street, on a Saturday during the Christmas shopping season. A painted canvas transformed the street into a Formula 1 starting grid, while music played and an announcer introduced the competitors. The artists controlled their own sculptures as they raced back and forth through the city.

FASTEST ART IN TOWN! reduces artistic competition to its most direct possible criterion. The work does not need to be beautiful, meaningful or thought-provoking. It simply needs to cross the finish line first.

The project was part of a 2024 JAM PUBLIC programme exploring what a self-organised art institution might produce through small public experiments. The programme, which also included Mini Art and Propaganda Club, was supported by Arts Council Norway and Kristiansand Municipality.
